Gudekote Bear Sanctuary

Wildlife enthusiasts have a reason to cheer. Karnataka’s as well as Ballari district’s second sloth bear sanctuary is open now for tourists. The Gudekote Sloth Bear Sanctuary, spanning over 11,748 acres, was notified in 2013. Following the notification, the forest department did the groundwork, including fixing boundaries and putting in place an action plan. The sanctuary is around 70 km from the state’s first sloth bear sanctuary at Daroji.

The forest area here is rich in custard apple, jackfruit, ficus, jamun and other vegetation which bears feed on. Recent camera-trapping exercises by NGOs have revealed there are some 30 bears in the space, which experts say is ideal for sloth bear conservation. Leopards, peacocks, jackals, wild boars and porcupines also inhabit the area.
