East Karbi-Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary covers an area of 221.81 sq. kms and is situated in Karbi Anglong District. Animals commonly found here are Elephant, Tiger, Bison and Bear etc.November to April is the best time to visit this sanctuary. It is an important component of the Karbi Anglong–Kaziranga landscape, rich in both floral & faunal diversity and is located in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council.
On July 27th,2000, the Gov. of Assam notified the forest area of Mikir Hill Reserve Forest & its adjacent forest land as the East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary. It is administratively controlled by the East Karbi Anglong Forest Division.This sanctuary is also a integral part of the Kaziranga- Karbi Anglong Elephant reserve. This sanctuary is at a height of 80-100 m from sea level.
East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary houses a plethora of exotic flora as well as rare species of wild animals and birds. The reserve is use to protect and preserve variegated species of resident and migratory birds. A sylvan lake of captivating beauty surrounds the reserve.
This tropical hill sanctuary is very rich in biodiversity.It is an ideal habitat for many different species of mammals, some of them are Tiger,Leopard,Clouded Leopard,Jungle Cat, Barking Deer, Sambar, Asian Elephant, Gaur, Capped Langur, Slow Loris, Pigtailed Macaque, Rhesus Macaque,Wild Dog, Civet, Chinese Pangolin, Porcupine, Mongoose etc.
In addition to these mammals, this sanctuary is an ideal habitat for many species of reptiles & amphibians which includes Brown Tortoise, Python, King Cobra, Monitor Lizard etc.
This sanctuary is also rich in faunal diversity too.So far about 260 species of different birds have been identified from this sanctuary.It is estimated that this total count could be more than 350.Among the many birds found here are 4 species of Hornbill, Green Pigeon, Green Imperiol Pigeon, Rackettailed Drongo, Jungle Myna, Black Headed Oriole,Minivet, Eagles,Woodpecker etc.
The vegetation of this forest is a mix of tropical semi evergreen & moist deciduous forest.Some of the prominent tree species found here are Holokh, Khokon, Bhelu, Nahor, Poma, Hilikha etc.
The ecological harmony of Assam is enhanced by the presence of the numerous national parks and wildlife reserves. East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary houses several species of birds dappled in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors. Many of the birds migrate from Tibet, China, Europe and Siberia during their freezing winters. The birds usually arrive in early November and leave by February while some prefer to make a permanent halting and hatch their fledglings. It is indeed a delightful experience to spend a lazy day exploring the tranquil wilderness of the sanctuary as the birds twitter away merrily perched atop the trees.
East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary is also noted with its assortment of wild animals. The majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, the imperial wild elephant, the strapping Indian bison and the ferocious Himalayan bear all find pride of place with the sanctuary’s serene premises.
