Tiruppudaimarathur Conservation Reserve

Community participation and public support is crucial for any conservation effort to succeed. Amendments to the Wild life protection act in 2003, provided for a mechanism to provide recognition and legal backing to the community initiated efforts in wildlife protection. It provides for a flexible system wherein the wildlife conservation is achieved without compromising the community needs. Tiruppudaimarathur conservation reserve one such effort of the village community which came forward to protect the birds nesting in their village and acted for declaration of conservation reserve. This is the First Conservation reserve to be established in the Country declared by Government of Tamil Nadu G.O.Ms.No.17 Environment and Forests Dept. dt. 14.02.2005. Now the village community and Forest department manage the area.

In Tiruppudaimaradur a Temple in the village having a compound covering around 2.84 Ha. Within which the nesting area is located. The village is adjacent to Tamiraparani river.

Around the temple, 20 huge, century old trees of Terminalia arjuna, Basillus latifolia, Neem, Maruthu and Illuppai are available and they constitute the best nesting site for birds.

At present Little Egretts, Pond heron and Painted Stork are nesting and their numbers are around 120 and 300 respectively. Spot billed pelicans are also coming for refuge but are not nesting. Pond heron and egrets are nesting in backyards of few houses also while Painted storks are around temple only.
Adjacent to the temple ,Tambiraparani river flows and the surrounding area is having few ponds and lot of agricultural fields and all these provide food (fish) for the above birds. The area is adjacent to the Kalakad Mundanthurai tiger reserve by 10 kms. Birds are visiting for the past 5-6 years and the number is gradually increasing. The villagers are interested in protecting and are nursing and feeding the orphaned birds.

Entry into the Sanctuary is with permission during the specified hours only. Wildlife sighting is a matter of chance. Inform of all sightings and appreciate the habitat also. Wear dark clothes so as to be inconspicuous and merge with the surroundings. Maintain absolute silence during van and elephant rides for better sighting. Do not kindle fire in the forest and avoid smoking while in the sanctuary. Entry on foot, camp fires, music, cooking, littering in the sanctuary is prohibited. Do not get down from the vehicle. Use of spot lights, fast driving, blowing of horn etc., are prohibited. Bathing, washing and fishing in the river is prohibited. Consumption of alcoholic drinks and carrying of arms in the sanctuary are strictly prohibited. Disposable plastic bags, cups, plates, PET bottles are banned. Kindly do not use them.
