Nagarahole is named after Nagarhole – (Cobra river in the local Kannada language) – a winding river which runs eastwards through its centre. It was originally constituted into a sanctuary in the year 1955 covering an area of 258 sq. kms and subsequently expanded to its adjoining areas of Mysore district and now extends over an area of 643.39 sq. kms which was given the status of a National Park in 1983. In 1999, it was honored as the thirty-seventh Project Tiger, Tiger reserves of India.

Nagarhole National Park is one of India’s chief Tiger Reserves along with the adjoining Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Together with the adjoining Bandipur National Park (870 sq. kms), Mudumalai National Park (320 sq. kms) and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (344 sq. km), it forms the largest protected area in Southern India, covering an area of 1534 sq. kms.

The southern part of Nagarhole which is in Mysore District on the banks of River Kabini (Kapila) is called the Kabini Jungle and is extremely popular for great sightings and is a Wildlife photographers dream location.

The park is rich in flora and fauna and features lush forest retreat, small rivulets, hills, valleys and waterfalls. The park also boasts of its variety of wildlife housing many species of tigers, Gaur (Indian bison), elephants, Indian leopards, and deers like Chital, Sambar among others.

Geographical Location of Nagarhole National Park: Nagarhole National Park is located at a 50 kms (31 mi) from the major city of Mysore. It is situated between the two districts of Mysore and Kodagu in the state of Karnataka. The park stretches at the foothills of the Western Ghats spreading down the Brahmagiri hills and south towards Kerala state. River Kabini separates the Nagarhole National Park from the Bandipur National Park. Lakshmana and Teentha rivers flow nearby the Nagarhole National Park and the entire park area is enveloped in greenery and flora with waterfalls adding to its beauty truly makes the Nagarhole National Park a beautiful habitat for wildlife animals.
