Safari at Nagarhole and Bandipur

In Bandipur and in general all over Karnataka Jeep Safari is usually offered by Jungle Lodges & Resorts (& the Department of Forest) and a room booked there automatically ensures a safari ride. There are other luxury resorts like the Serrai, the WindFlower, Orange County etc where your Safari is also automatically ensured but seats are limited and are based on first come first serve and you need to book the slot with the front desk as soon as you check-in. And of course there are many other resorts which are set inside the forest but don’t offer Safari and you need to go to the Forest Department and buy the tickets there for a Bus Safari.

Safari Timings and the Best season for a Safari

The Jeep safari is an Open Jeep Safari and it lasts usually for 2.5 hrs to 3 hours and the timings are always from 6.30 am to 9/9.30 am (the morning safari) and 3.30pm to 6pm (the evening safari). The forest and the resorts are open round the year so is the safari weather permitting.  Unlike in the rest of the country (especially in the central and northern part of India) where you need to book your safari independent of your resort booking (where you need to book your safari slot 90-days  ahead), there is no such rush or madness here in any of the jungles in Karnataka (be it Bandipur or Nagarhole). BTW the best time for the safari is from the month of October until June. The weather during these months is clear, thus increasing the chances of getting the glimpses of the animals.

Safari Experience

Jeep Safari is one of the best ways to explore the rich flora and fauna of Bandipur & Nagarhole. You get to see some of the species found only in this part of the world. The floral beauty is definitely a visual treat to one’s eyes. If you happen to be the adventure enthusiast or the wildlife photographer, then the jeep safari is a trip you must not miss. You get an opportunity to see the untouched part of the world through such safaris. One can find the various species of the animals such as deer, wild boar, sloth bear, leopard, crocodiles etc., ranging over 450 species of animals and birds. Mammals: Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Gaurs, Dholes (Indian Wild Dog), Sloth Bears, Langur, four-horned antelopes, chital deer (Spotted), Sambar deer, Muntjac (Barking Deer), Mouse Deer, Wild Boar, Indian giant squirrels

Birds: Peafowl, Grey Junglefowl, Honey buzzards, Red-headed vultures, Indian vultures, Flowerpeckers, Hoopoes, Indian rollers, Brown fish owls, Crested serpent eagles, Changeable hawk-eagles

Reptiles: spectacled cobra, Indian rock python, viper, rat snake, muggers, monitor lizards, Indian chameleon, Indian pond terrapin, agamids and flying lizards.
