Alarm Calls that you need to familiarize before you hop on a Wildlife Safari for a better chance of Sighting those Big Cats

Many animals make alarm calls when they sense predators (like Tiger or Leopard) nearby. These also give a good clue for you to stay put in that place and expect a good sighting of these big cats. Some of the animals you hear giving alarms especially in the forest range of Bandipur and Nagarhole (Kabini) are Common Langur, Sambar, Spotted Deer & Barking Deer.

Common Langur:

The Common Langur is a widespread resident of the Indian forests. The Common Langur is an arboreal monkey, spending most of its time feeding on leaves, flowers, fruits and berries. The Common Langur is most reliable when it comes to spotting a predator. When you hear a Langur alarm call in the forest, you can be rest assured that there is surely a Tiger, a Leopard or Wild Dogs in the vicinity. The Bandipur national park and Nagarhole National Park (Kabini) are favorite locations to observe Langurs in close quarters. If you are in a safari, and you hear this langur alarm call, better to stay put there for a while as the chances of spotting a predator will be very high.

Also like Vervet Monkeys in Africa which makes different alarm signals for different kind of predators, there is a possibility of our Langur making different alarm calls for different cats like Tigers and Leopards (as they can base their action on the kind of alarm call as climb up the tree when it is a Tiger and may be climb to a much higher spot if it is a leopard or move down if it is an Eagle etc.). I don’t see any work done on this but let me try to record these alarm calls and do an analysis in the ensuing days!!
