There are a dozen gates out of which 6 are core gates and another 6 are zone (or buffer) gates. They are all at varying distances and each gate is approx. 20kms to 100kms apart and duration wise more than 2 hrs away. Also tiger sighting via all of these gates vary based on the season, movements and various factors and it is always good to see the sighting for last few days and then pick the right one.

These are the six core gates,

  • Moharli
  • Khutvanda
  • Kolara
  • Navegaon
  • Pangdi
  • Zhari (Kolsa)

These are the six zone (aka buffer) gates,

Tadoba Tiger Sightings

Here are some of the metrics we use at WildTrails India to help customers choose the right tadoba safari gate based on various factors such as availability of Gypsies, TSI* for the given gate, last 2 to 3 days Tiger Sighting index etc. Ideally it is always good to book a safari after seeing the TSI for last 2 to 3 days but the issue is safari is usually booked 60 to 120 days in advance. So here is the issue but what we suggest is to book 2 or 3 core gates in advance and buffer gates can be easily booked 2 to 3 days in advance and hence multiple gate booking and access to a car to commute between these gates, almost we can guarantee tiger sighting. Also topping this with an expert tiger tracker increases exponentially your chances of seeing the tiger.

[BTW you can get the TSI for each gate via WildTrails India App]

I hope its less confusing and less daunting than when we started the topic but if you feel otherwise, always contact us at tadoba@wildtrails.in. We will be more than happy to help.

📊 Sightings Matter: Why WildTrails’ Data Sets You Apart

At WildTrails, we believe tiger sightings are 10% luck and 90% knowledge, preparation, and timing. That’s why we created the Tiger Sighting Index — a tool backed by real data to help you decide where, when, and how to plan your safari.

We collect sightings data from multiple local sources across regions — whether it’s birds or big cats — and convert it into actionable summaries. This empowers travellers with up-to-date information on zone activity and animal movement, dramatically increasing the chances of memorable sightings.

🧭 Why Expert Guides are very helpful

The jungle may appear calm — but to a trained eye and ear, it’s alive with signals. A knowledgeable guide knows how to decode nature’s whispers.

From alarm calls of deer and langurs to fresh pugmarks in the soil, every detail tells a story and gives a cue. A skilled guide reads clues like scent trails, ripples in waterholes, drag marks, or disturbed vegetation. These are signs most travellers might overlook — but guides interpret them to track elusive wildlife, turning a casual safari into an authentic, thrilling experience.

A good guide doesn’t just take you on a drive — they narrate the story of the jungle.
